Nursing Mother's Program

UM Supports Nursing Mothers in the Workplace

Breastfeeding is one of the most natural and beneficial activities for mom and baby. It is a choice many mothers are making today, as it results in significant health benefits for both child and mother, as well as emotional benefits, economic benefits, and environmental benefits/

The University of Miami has adopted policy provisions to afford nursing mothers with the opportunity to express milk in private, safe and accessible locations.

Nursing mothers wishing to continue nursing after returning to work following the birth of a child must submit a written request using the Nursing Mothers Room Request Form.

Why Work and Pump?

As a preventative measure, breastfeeding promotes improved health outcomes and is cost-effective. By continuing to breastfeed after you return to work, you will:

  • Provide the best nutrition for your baby
  • Make it possible to keep breastfeeding when you are together
  • Save money
  • Avoid the health risks associated with formula feeding
  • Miss less work, because breastfed babies are sick less

Nursing Mother Rooms at UM

In order to better support our students, staff, and faculty who are new mothers and wish to breastfeed their babies, the University of Miami provides multiple Nursing Mothers Rooms across the University's Coral Gables, Medical, and Marine campuses.

Each of the rooms provides private space where nursing mothers are welcome to pump or nurse. Use of the Nursing Mother Rooms are optional for nursing mothers. A private space within a nursing mother's building may also be used, if such space exists. Employees are encouraged to work with their supervisors to identify appropriate space within their building.
