October is Disabilities in the Workplace Awareness Month at UM. Join your colleagues at a variety of live events to learn more about the resources available at UM and how you can support an inclusive environment for people with disabilities. 

Eligible faculty and staff members may earn up to 25 Well Canes Incentive Points for attending one Disabilities in the Workplace Awareness Month session, or 50 Well Canes Points by attending at least two sessions.
I learned about the importance of dispelling myths and the fact that people with disabilities are the largest minority group in the US. When you meet one person with [a disability] you’ve only met one person. It’s important to understand each [ability] and ask if someone needs help

Leverage Zoom, presentations to create inclusive meetings

Learn ways to effectively use technology to better engage your audience and increase your effectiveness. Join experts from the University of Miami to explore the many ways you can create inclusive meetings, presentations, and virtual learning environments through Zoom.

Reasonable accommodations under the American Disabilities Act

Thursday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m.

During this session, Michael Gigante, manager, employee accommodations, will provide a general overview of reasonable accommodations and answer questions regarding the workplace under the ADA.

ACCESS Miami—The Mailman Center for Child Development

Thursday, Oct. 14, at 10 a.m.

ACCESS Miami is an online hub for the disability community that elevates essential programs and programs. Join experts from The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, Center for Independent Living South Florida, Nothing About Us Without Us, and the Mailman Center for Child Development to explore resources that are available to the Miami-Dade community.

Friday, Oct. 15, at noon

During this one-hour workshop, learn simple techniques that encourage diversity of thought at work and home. Guided by experts from the Lowe Art Museum, participants will practice mindfully slowing down, staying neutral, and opening up to the perspectives of others. Participation is limited to ensure the conversation is engaging and interactive. 

Monday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m.

Facilitated by Kirsten Schwarz, lecturer in the School of Education and Human Development, this session will allow participants to increase their awareness and sensitivity of those with disabilities in the workplace. Attendees will gain a better understanding of how reasonable accommodations help to build independence and strengthen teams, discuss the appropriate expectations, and understand the distinction between an accommodation and a preference.


Tuesday, Oct. 19, at noon

 Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m. 

Join the University of Miami Faculty and Staff in launching the Disability Network Alliance Employee Resource Group (ERG).  During this session you’ll hear about the mission of the Disability Network Alliance, meet other members, and learn how to get involved and support Disability Inclusion. 


Thursday, Oct 21, at 4:30 p.m.  

Facilitated by During this session Nanette Vega, EdD, MA, Assistant Dean for Diversity, Inclusion and Community Engagement and Janet Bringuez-Sanchez, M.Ed., Assistant Director, Programs with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement will discuss why diversity, equity and inclusion outcomes and goals cannot be accomplished without addressing the needs, concerns, and priorities of people with disabilities.

Friday, Oct. 22, at noon

Moderated by Shelly Baer, director of leadership training initiatives for the Mailman Center for Child Development, co-founder and director of the Bold Beauty Project, and creator of ACCESS Miami, this session will provide a lively and informative conversation on disability awareness and inclusion. 



Monday, Oct. 25, at noon
The Miller School of Medicine’s Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement will discuss why diversity, equity, and inclusion outcomes and goals cannot be accomplished without addressing the needs, concerns, and priorities of people with disabilities. This presentation will illuminate the range of approaches to identify areas of strength to build on, along with gaps to address.

Tuesday, Oct. 26, at noon

This session, facilitated by UMIT, will introduce accessibility tools that are available through Microsoft to University students, faculty, and staff. Learn the many ways to utilize Microsoft Office’s built-in accessibility tools to create inclusive content.


Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 12:30 p.m.

Facilitated by Diane Adreon, division director, transition and adult programs for University of Miami Nova Southeastern Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (UM-NSU CARD), this session will share expert insight and guidance regarding autism in the workplace and resources available through UM-NSU CARD.
